Medals Galore at Two European Championsips

26 August 2024

There was big success for GB at two European Championships at the weekend. The Under-14 Youth Waterski squad and the Barefoot squad are returning home with 17 medals, including four golds.

At the IWWF Europe & Africa Youth Waterski Championships, held in Recetto, Italy, the squad picked up six medals – one gold, two silvers and three bronzes, all coming in the Under-14s age category.

Harley Coster (14) won four individual medals - gold in jump, bronze in both slalom and tricks and silver overall.

The gold in jump came after Harley had a big crash on his first attempt in the preliminary round.

"Absolutely thrilled," Harley said. "Despite the first jump in prelims not going to plan, I dusted myself off and got a PB of 42.5m. Winning gold was the cherry on top!"

Issy Cosgrove (12) won bronze in slalom, breaking her own Under-14 Girls British record in the final. She also finished 4th in both jump and overall and 6th in tricks.

The individual medals are the first at a major Championships for both Harley and Issy.

The GB Under-14s also won an impressive Team silver, thanks to the strong results, including personal best scores, from Harley, Issy and across the team.

The other scoring members of the team were Jimmy Elliott (14) and Buddy Carrington (11), who both made the tricks final. Lara Cosgrove (10) was the final member of the Under-14 squad, competing as a wildcard in tricks.

Although the Under-17s did not make it into the medals, there were many impressive results and personal best scores, not least from Seb Turp (16) and Harrison Crossland (17) who made all their finals and PBd in all their events.

The Under-17s team finished 7th and the combined U14/U17 team was 4th.

At the IWWF Europe & Africa Barefoot Waterski Championships in Maurik, Netherlands, there were 11 medals for GB - including three golds in the Open Men category.

• Tom Heaps (25) won gold overall, silver in jump and bronze in both tricks and slalom.
