Seniors Win 3 Medals at Waterski Worlds

10 September 2024

Three of Great Britain’s oldest competitive waterskiers have won medals at the Senior World Championships, including one gold. This week it's the Under-21s Europeans.

The 3 medallists were part of a small squad of eight skiers competing at the IWWF World Over-35 Waterski Championships, held at Botaski in Seseña, Spain, from 4-8 September.

The team was depleted by several last minute injuries and withdrawals.

Jonathan Cohen (75) won gold in the slalom event in the Men’s Over-75 age category with a score that would be impressive for a waterskier decades younger - 1.5@11.25m (49kph).  He scored 2@11.25m in the preliminary round.

Just a few weeks ago Jonathan became European Champion but this is his first world title.

“I’m obviously extremely delighted that, after 12 years of going to the Worlds and being fourth twice, I’ve finally made it to the podium – and I’ve done it in style,” he said. “So, I’m happy and it’s good to get the nervousness behind me and to start to enjoy my skiing again after today.”

Carl Turp (81) is the first octogenarian to represent GB at a World Championships. He won bronze in the Men’s Over-80 age category.
